Slovenian or Slovene is the official language in Slovenia and is spoken by some two million people there, as well as by minorities in Italy, Austria and Hungary. It belongs to the southern Slavic language group of the Indo-Germanic languages.

There is proof of written Slovenian since the 11th century. The development of the written language began with the translation of the Bible in the second half of the 16th century. Slovenian has six cases, three genders, singular and plural and – as a unique feature – a widely-used dual form. The male forms of animate nouns, which are sometimes quite pronounced in other Slavic languages, only play a role in the singular. The otherwise liberal word order in sentences usually follows the “subject – predicate – indirect object – direct object” rule. The phonetic system includes eight vowel sounds and 22 consonantal sounds; the word stress is free. There are numerous German, Italian, Russian, Czech, Serbian and Croatian borrowings in Slovenian vocabulary; starting in the 20th century, international loanwords have also been adopted into the language.

Slovenian has some 46 dialects, which are divided into seven main groups. The written language is based primarily on Lower Carniolan; it was regulated at the end of the 19th century. The spelling corresponds largely to the pronunciation. Slovenian is written with Latin letters, while its pronunciation is regulated by means of diacritical marks – special characters above or below the letters.
