Swedish is the official language in Sweden and Finland and has roughly nine million speakers. It is an East Nordic language from the North Germanic group of Indo-Germanic languages.
Swedish evolved from Runic Swedish via Old Swedish (about 1200–1500) to Modern Swedish. As far back as the Old Swedish period, a uniform written language emerged that was written using the Latin alphabet. Numerous Latin, Middle Low German and Danish loanwords date from this period. Modern Swedish was strongly influenced by the translation of the Bible (1541); the grammar hardly changed after around 1700. In the 20th century, Swedish was modernized and its vocabulary updated. Swedish has a very melodious ring thanks to word and sentence stress in different pitches, full endings and varying vowels – the latter being short or long, high, medium-high or low. It is written and spoken in the standard imperial language (“riksspråk”), for which the spelling was revised in 1906. The Swedish alphabet has 29 characters including three special characters for umlauts at the end of the alphabet.
There are six major dialect groups: the Svealand and Norrland dialects, which are closely related to Norwegian, the Götaland dialects, southern Swedish, Gutnish or Gotlandic, and eastern Swedish dialects. Swedish is closely related to Norwegian and Danish and shares a significant proportion of vocabulary with both languages – this means that Western Swedes can easily converse with Norwegians and Southern Swedes with Danes.
