Serbian is the official language of Serbia. It also has official status in Montenegro and parts of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia and Romania. Since October 2007, the Serbian spoken in Montenegro is officially called “Montenegrin.” There are about twelve million people worldwide who speak Serbian.

Serbian is a southern Slavic language and as such belongs to the Indo-Germanic language family. The Serbian language is culturally influenced from the east – resulting from the fact that Serbia was initially Byzantine in orientation and was part of the Ottoman-Turkish Empire from the 15th century onward. The Cyrillic script as well as numerous Turkish loanwords are evidence of this. Serbian is among the inflectional languages, meaning that the words are inflected. It is closely related to Croatian and has nearly the same grammatical structures, although it differs markedly in phonetics and vocabulary. The Serbian dialects belong to the Shtokavian group – this dialectal area stretches as far as southern Croatia and western Bosnia.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Serbian became the official written language, replacing Serbo-Croatian, which was artificially created in 1850 and officially used as the overarching language in the former Yugoslavia. Since then, more and more dialect words have been included in its vocabulary and Croatian loanwords have been avoided in order to distinguish Serbian from Croatian; in Bosnia, Turkish loanwords are favored and cultivated.
